2015 is over and it was a big and exciting year for Search. 2016 however is already panning out to be bigger and more exciting than ever.
The most significant milestone we experienced last year was the Mobilegeddon update – a very long awaited algorithm change from Google which targeted thousands of websites which continued to lag behind. We also witnessed a major overhaul of local rankings and plenty of other minor updates which Google enjoys throwing in to keep us on our toes.
2016 has arrived, so it’s time to evaluate a whole new set of changes in the way businesses are marketing their products and trying to improve their rankings with SEO.
Here are Five SEO trends for 2016
- The Evolution of Micro-Moments
Micro-moments are a fascinating new trend which was first introduced by Google in 2015. Mobile has changed everything we ever expected from the brands we connect with. It’s essentially split the customer journey to purchase into hundreds of micro-moments – which are real-time and intent-driven. Google talks about these moments being rife with opportunity for brands to connect with their potential customers to shape decisions and preferences. Micro-Moments are quickly becoming a game changer in the marketing world and will challenge the traditional thinking of marketing professionals.
- Video Content
Video has been killing it online throughout 2015 and that is going to continue well into 2016. Last year The Guardian stated, “By 2017, video will account for 69 percent of all consumer Internet traffic, according to Cisco.” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook is generating 8 billion video views per day. The number of video posts per person has increased 75 percent globally and 94 percent in the U.S and more than 50% of people who visit Facebook in the U.S. every day watch at least one video. The type of content people will want to consume in 2016 looks a lot different than the content we saw in 2015, and the rise of Video is only set to continue exponentially.
- App Store Optimisation (ASO)
This is a crucial piece of the Mobile App Marketing puzzle. With the rise in mobile we also saw a rise in the creation of apps. Now there’s over 2 million mobile apps in the major app stores so getting your app discovered is one of the biggest issues you’ll face in 2016. This year we will see an increase in demand for App Store Optimisation (ASO) in order for these apps to compete against each other.
- Aggregated Content
In 2016 we will see a rise in aggregate posts, images, and videos from live events and unfolding news stories into a single channel for people to see. Complex software will have the ability to take snippets of information from millions of social profiles and piece them together to form a clear story. Users will ultimately become the content creators and users will see live events unfolding first-hand.
- Page Tagging
For the first time in history, we saw mobile overtake desktop for online searches in 2015. This trend will continue to surge in 2016 which means we will also see heading tags rolling out at a far greater rate, more frequently. Cellular data networks are much slower than WIFI so it’s important to maintain consistency in the structure down to H5 tags in order to make it easy for different devices and browsers to load pages effectively.
2016 will be another massive year for SEO and we’re excited to see how these major trends play out over the year. Exciting and new technologies are evolving daily, and with that comes a whole new landscape for the online world. We’re sure Google will have their own hat tricks ready to play and we’re looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds.
