Did you know that the way Google views your website is completely different to the way you, and everyone else views it?
The look, layout and overall aesthetics of your website may be state of the art and deliver a great experience for your customers - but unless Google’s interpreting the same thing from its end then that might not be counting for much.
If Google can’t crawl your website properly, and see the content for which it should be ranking you highly for, then there’s a chance your site won’t be making it to the SERPS - or at least as well it could be. And if Google can’t crawl your website properly, you could be missing out on a lot of traffic.
So how do you find out if your website is being properly crawled by Google?
Fetch & Render
You’ll then see a preview of what Google sees vs what you would typically see on your end. To carry out a quick check on your website follow the below steps:
1. Navigate to the Webmaster Tools home page, login then select your site. 2. Find the navigation on the left hand side and click “Crawl”, then select “Fetch as Google”. 3. In the box provided, enter the path of the webpage on your website you want Google to retrieve. 4. From drop-down, choose the type of Googlebot with which you wish to perform a fetch (Desktop, Mobile, Mobile cHTML or Mobile XHTML/WML) 5. If you choose to do a basic Fetch, you’ll be able to see the HTTP response that Google got from your webpage. If you choose to do a Fetch and Render, then you’ll also get to see how your page looks in the specified browser.
After going through your results from Fetch and Render, you’ll be able to see where certain pages of your website could be improved for better rankings. Google has recently announced that soon their algorithm will be looking to the mobile version of your website first and foremost to determine the ranking of both the mobile and desktop version. The Fetch and Render tool will be crucial to use to ensure that your mobile sight has no rendering issues and won’t hurt your rankings.
